Great Ocean Road Region

St. Kilda beach is located just a few kilometres south of Melbourne’s CBD is a place for some serious fun under the sun. Part of Port Phillip Bay, it is a popular spot with tourists and locals alike. The beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll, rollerblade, sun bath and swimming. St Kilda Beach offers great cafes, supermarkets and a fun park. The Beach is wide, clean and relatively safe as it is on the bay. The Esplanade is undoubtedly St Kilda`s primary draw. The Esplanade is divided into two sections upper and lower. The Upper Esplanade offers a splendid view of the bay and the famous Esplanade Hotel here is the local landmark and also serving as a popular venue for holding musical events. Another big attraction here is the weekly Sunday crafts market which is held on the Upper Esplanade since the 80s. Local artists and craftsmen come with their wares here and it is a great place to pick up things like ceramics, paintings, silver jewelry and other souvenirs. The Lower Esplanade located right on the beach is also equally significant. Replete with a number of beachside restaurants, it is also home to a number of landmarks like the St Kilda Baths, the Palais Theatre and Luna Park the amusement park.
The Fitzroy Town Hall (FTH) an example of the Free Classical style of Victorian architecture Hall is located in Napier Street in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne. Built in two stages this civic building is given the status of a "Heritage place”. The building refurbished and restored in 2007, now houses a number of Council departments, Yarra Libraries, and a venue for severalamany civil, social and educational events.
Bourke Street Mall
The Bourke Street Mall located between Swanston Walk and Elizabeth Street is a major shopping destination in Melbourne. This pedestrian friendly strip is home to major departmental stores like Myer and David Jones and large specialty stores. A major facelift of the area was done during the preparation for 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Street theatres and performances by buskers are a regular feature that greets visitors in the Bourke Street Mall.
Elwood Beach
Elwood Beach is located 7.5 km from Melbourne city centre and 2km from St. Kilda. It is a popular spot for windsurfing and a host of other beachside sports activities. The southern part of the beach is used for water skiing. The Beach’s vast foreshore provides a great barbeque area, picnic spots, tennis court, lawns, angling club, boating club, walking and cycling paths et al.
Lilydale
Lilydale is located 35 km from Melbourne`s central business district on its outer eastern fringes. By car it takes an hour from the CBD to reach Lilydale via the Eastern Freeway and Maroondah Highway. Places of interest includes Lilydale Lake with an 80-hectare recreational area offering sailing, walking and cycling trails, canoeing along with a host of other equally interesting activitries. Another attraction is the Lilydale to Warburton rail trail that passes through some scenic landscapes. Alfred Square, St. Kilda Built in the Edwardian period the memorial in Alfred Square is a poignant symbol of the Boer war. It was erected in 1905 to honour the St Kilda soldiers who fought valiantly and perished in the Boer War in South Africa. The memorial in the Stripped Classical style incorporates eucalypt motifs into the faience work and follows the green and gold colour scheme thus reflecting the upsurge in nationalism of those times.
